Artist statement – Bill Denham :

I made this book both as a lasting tribute to a fellow poet and spoken word artist, a young man whom I loved, and as a broader reminder to any who will listen, that young people are still being killed by gun violence in our cities at an alarming rate.

Since Matt’s murder, at the rate of seven lives a day, 13,286 young people have died in our country from gun violence. Most go unremarked–perhaps a spontaneous street shrine that lasts for a few days or a blip on the local news.

Looking for Matthew, though an expression of my personal grief and of my struggles with personal responsibility, is a permanent reminder of all the other stories that go untold and of the unavoidable reality that our political and economic systems and our institutions are failing our young people and that this failure is our collective failure. These are all our children. Matthew is your child.
